National Research University «Moscow Power Engineering Institute» is one of the largest technical universities in the field of energy, electrical engineering, radio engineering, electronics and information technology.

National Research University «Moscow Power Engineering Institute» was founded in Moscow in 1930 to provide the developing energy sector with engineering personnel.

National Research University «Moscow Power Engineering Institute» was awarded two state orders and seven orders of foreign countries for success in training of engineers and academic personnel. In 2018 National Research University «Moscow Power Engineering Institute» proved the activity compliance with the criteria of the EFQM excellence model. In 2019 National Research University «Moscow Power Engineering Institute» was rated „5 stars“ according to the QS Stars audit results under the notions of „Teaching“, „Employment“, „Innovation“ and „Infrastructure“.

National Research University «Moscow Power Engineering Institute» is a permanent member of the International Association of Universities (IAU) under UNESCO.

In 2009 MPEI joined the University of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and it is currently the coordinator of the „Energy“ field. Since 2016 National Research University «Moscow Power Engineering Institute» has joined the educational project of the BRICS Network University, where it leads the international topic group on Energy. Since 2017 National Research University «Moscow Power Engineering Institute» has joined the CIS Network University.

On the 30th of October, 2015, Heads of CIS States Council decided to approve National Research University „Moscow Power Engineering Institute“ to be a back-up organization of the member states of the Commonwealth of Independent States on training, occupational retraining and advanced training of personnel in the field of power engineering.

National Research University «Moscow Power Engineering Institute» is an active member of several international associations: Association of Technical Universities of Russia and China – ATURK; Network for energy supply and energy efficiency – NESEFF; International Council on Large Electric Systems — CIGRE; Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization (GEIDCO); University Alliance of the New Silk Road, etc.

Nobel laureates A. Sakharov and P. Cherenkov were working at MPEI at different times. There was arranged the first space television transmission of Yu. Gagarin from space, there was photographed the dark side of the Moon and there were received radar photos of the surface of Venus – it was all done involving MPEI scientists and students.

Among MPEI graduates there are Chairman of the China’s State Council, Li Peng and President of Romania, Ion Iliescu, ministers of energy and heads of energy companies of many countries of the world. MPEI graduates work in the energy sector, industry, modern IT companies and universities in various countries. Currently 1700 students and Ph.D.-students from 68 countries are trained at MPEI.

More than 250 foreign universities and worldwide renowned companies such as ABB, Siemens, Schneider Electric, EPRI, Skoda, Samsung and others became MPEI partners in the field of science and education.

At MPEI there is the unique training combined heat power plant to train specialists and to conduct scientific research.
